Bilingualism is the New Key for Business Success

By Super Admin on Jul 26, 2011

There are two interesting and inevitable trends occurring in this millennium: the U.S.’s demographics are changing from a white majority to an increasing population of Hispanics and Asians and trade especially in the U.S., is becoming more and more globalized. Bilingualism and multilingualism is increasingly becoming a valuable skill especially in business. According to HR Management, particularly in Western States, like California and Nevada, companies plan to hire more bilingual candidates in 2011. Work experience is now not enough to succeed in the workforce. Now, in most interviews and resumes, it’s an advantage to state that you know a second language fluently or even a third. There are companies especially corporations like Coca-Cola, BMW, Apple, and Michelin that conducts business and trade abroad that are in need of bilingual and multilingual skilled individuals. It is important when BMW creates manufacturing factories in China that there are bilingual managers that can communicate with the Chinese workers and German superiors and have the management skills and knowledge about car parts to manage the factories. It is also important in the US for some employees to know Spanish in customer service especially in states like California and Florida where there is a large Hispanic population.

Interns at Foreign Translations, Inc. recently conducted polls on Linkedin and asked if companies preferred to hire a person who was bilingual or a person with work experience. There were some conflicting answers. Some stated that they would rather hire a person who with more experience because it doesn’t matter if you can communicate in another language, if “you don’t know what you’re talking about”. However, most people agreed that bilingualism is a valuable skill and it’s very hard for people to know another language fluently unless they spoke the language since they were kids or lived in a foreign country. Most business professionals agreed that if you’re motivated, getting work experience and learning the trade of business is easy. Globalism has changed how companies hire an employee. Bilingualism is a valuable trait and now Americans must face the fact that English is not the only dominant language. Yes, English is important and is still used often to communicate in business. However, it is also important now for American employees to learn another language especially as U.S. companies are now expanding in foreign countries and sell products or services that are even more popular in countries other than the US. If a BMW employee tries to sell a car to a Chinese consumer, you can bet that the employee can speak Chinese.
